Born and raised in Colorado Rockies, I began flying gliders when I was 16. When I was 17, I went to an aviation college and earned all my ratings through instrument, where my age prevented me from becoming a commercial pilot or flight instructor. I waited a couple of months to turn 18, and immediately took both check rides to become a flight instructor. I also earned my multi-engine instrument rating.
After graduating from flight school, I went to Kenmore Air Harbor in Seattle and earned my commercial single-engine seaplane certificate. I then drove (and boated) to Alaska to work the docks for Ketchikan Air Service for a couple months. That adventure complete, I came back to Colorado and earned my multi-engine flight instructor certificate, then enrolled in business school.
For the past six years, I've been an aviation writer and photographer. I've been the editor of Sport Aerobatics Magazine for nearly four years, and have been the editor of the newsletter for two.
I've not gone through-hiking for three weeks on the PCT with a 10 pound pack, but I have camped solo in Alaska in February. My experience has taught me that the best gear is not necessarily the most popular or obvious choice, and one must do extensive research to find it--thus the reason for this site.
I'm gathering a kit that will combine the highest-quality, most reliable components available in the world today at a price that won't give pilots the usual sticker shock. In fact, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how cheaply this insurance will cost.
In the meantime, please take a look at the SnowClaw, a shovel proudly manufactured in Salt Lake City, Utah.
